VEEV One Starter Kit

TECC sent us a new starter kit which should help to make the switch from smoking a doddle. We take a look at the new VEEV One kit and flavours

One question that we often get asked on Potv is what is a decent starter kit to try. It is always a tricky question as vaping is a surprisingly personal thing, and what works for one person may not be the best for someone else. But it is a question we always welcome as it means the asker is ready to make that first step towards a smokefree life.

But this does beg the question, what makes a good starter kit. Well for me, I would say it needs to be very easy to use, affordable, and convenient to get new pods and consumables. Well on this premise, the new VEEV One should, in theory, fit the bill, and TECC very kindly sent us a kit along with all the flavours to try out.

About the VEEV One

When you first open your VEEV One starter kit, you will find a QR code on the inner box, and it says you can “explore the flavourful world of VEEV One”, so of course I pulled my camera from my pocket and checked it out. It opens a link to IQOS, a brand owned by Phillip Morris (yep, this is a vape kit owned by Big Tobacco), who are probably better known for their Heat not Burn products than more traditional vape kits. It looks like they are branching out further into smoke free products as they also produce a range of nicotine pouches, so they really mean business when it comes to embracing the future.

The VEEV One kit comes with everything you need to get up and running fast, including the main device, two different flavour pods, a USB-C to USB-C charging cable, and a host of instruction leaflets and guides. All of this will set you back just £8.99, which is a really good deal. Most kits in this price bracket won’t come with a charging cable, so this is a big plus, although you will need to make sure you have the correct power adapter.

The VEEV One is sleek and smart in a discreet way, and that always gets a big thumbs up from me. It is clearly aimed at adult smokers who want to use it for the right reasons. It is light and slim, so it will easily fit in even the smallest pocket of your jeans without creating any unsightly bulges! The branding is equally subtle with VEEV stamped into the body on the front, and all the legal stuff is printed in dark grey on the back, so it blends in well. There is a tiny airflow hole on each side, and on one side you will find a button to turn it on and off, and a small light up battery scale. I must admit that it is all so streamlined that I didn’t even notice the button and couldn’t work out why it wasn’t vaping. The value of reading instructions does sometimes get lost on me, but again, with a tiny kit in this price bracket, it is unusual to have the option to turn the power on and off. Unlike most kits out there, you just need to hold the button down for a couple of seconds to power up and down.

The only downside with a kit this small is that the battery is a tiny 400mAh, smaller than your average disposable device. But it is quite an efficient kit, so it lasts reasonably well. This is definitely a kit that I would recommend picking up a second kit though so you can make sure you always have a charged set up ready to go.

The pods hold the legal 2ml of e-liquid, and they just slot into the body with a satisfying click as the magnets take hold. Once in place, the battery gauge lights up to let you know that everything is properly fitted.

The draw is very tight which will suit people coming away from cigarettes. I was surprised just how much resistance I got from the pull; it is a true mouth to lung vape. The mouthpiece allows you to get a good seal to maximise the inhale, and it has been well designed.

TECC also allow you to fully customise your starter kit, so you have the option to pick your own flavours. You can pick two different flavours, and you get two of each pod. I think this is a brilliant idea as I often find that in preconfigured kits, there is normally one flavour that I wouldn’t choose, so this way you get exactly what you want.

The Flavours

All together there are twelve different flavour pod options available, including fruits, mint, and tobacco, so looking to the future and the incoming restrictions, all of these flavours should make it through the flavour bans. There is only one strength, 1.8%, but this should be the sweet spot for target users.

Strawberry

This is a light, jam style strawberry with a hit of cooling. It is simple, to the point, and does what it says on the tin.

Classic Tobacco

I would imagine this will be very popular as a starter flavour, and it works well. It is a dusky, smoky tobacco with a really ashy taste which is quite unusual in that it actually tastes like a lit cigarette rather than fresh tobacco. It will make the transition from smoking to vaping feel less daunting.

Lemon Lime

Equal amounts of tart lemon and slightly sweeter, smoother lime, with a bit of cooling to blend everything together. It is quite sharp, but this enhances the juiciness. It makes a change from the more candy lemon that a lot of starter kits go with.

Mango

This is a fairly reserved mango, leaning more on the greener, slightly unripe style, but underneath is a layer of a sweet, tropical flavour which I really like. Again, there is a very light iced effect, but this is more of a flavour enhancement.

Grape

This has a lot more ice, and a lot less flavour. I actually quite like the taste, but in a blind test, I wouldn’t have guessed what it was meant to be, in fact I had to keep looking at the box to check!

Passion Fruit, Kiwi, Guava

There is a good balance of the passion fruit and guava, but the kiwi dominates and partially undoes the good work of the first fruits, leaving a bit of a bitter aftertaste.

Blackcurrant

This is a great blackcurrant, dark yet sweet, and super juicy. Again, there is a bit of cooling here, but it doesn’t threaten to step into menthol territory. I’d happily vape this as a stand-alone flavour.

Pineapple Lemon

This is another one that didn’t quite line up with the flavour I’d expect. There is quite a lot of fresh ice and the real flavour struggles to break through which is a shame as it promises more than it delivers. The level of ice also increases the bitter notes

Blueberry

Light and floral, this is a summer vape when you want something delicate. It doesn’t scream blueberry, but it is pleasant enough. Not offensive would probably be the best fit.

Blue Raspberry

This isn’t usually a flavour I am a big fan of, but this is a very pleasant one. The raspberry element has that jammy feel, and it is rounded off with more floral taste. Again, there is a light ice which does bring in a slight bitterness, but this will depend how sensitive you are to bitter flavours.

Blue Mint

This is super fresh and is more like an extra strong mint, it quite took my breath away. I wasn’t expecting it to be that strong. I would have preferred a little more natural sweetness, but I’m just very picky.

Watermelon

This is a nice way to round off the flavours, sweet but refreshing and very melony. If you are sensitive to sweeteners, it is a bit more noticeable here, but the base flavour is pleasant.

Final Thought

The VEEV One is a very solid complete starter kit system which is a decent first step away from smoking. It ticks all of the boxes I outlined in my intro; it is easy to use, cheap, and accessible. It is the kind of kit that you can just pick up and use with no previous knowledge of vaping. The range of flavours is varied enough to keep things fresh and interesting too, and this is a big plus as any seasoned vaper will tell you how important flavour variation is when it comes to keeping smoke free. Finally, it is cheap enough not to put anyone off as not everyone wants to invest a large amount of money until they know whether vaping works for them. It wouldn’t be a kit I’d personally use as an experienced vaper, but it really isn’t aimed at people like me, but if I was going for a night out, it is small and discreet enough to be a perfect fit if you just want something that you can hide in your pocket and use as required.

If you think this might be the kit for you, or if you know someone who has shown an interest in quitting smoking and you want to give them a kit to encourage them, you can pick up the mix and match set from TECC, which includes the VEEV One device and 2x2 flavour pods for £8.99. You are going to need more pods moving forwards, and these can be purchased for £5.99 for 2 pods, 3 packs for £15, or for the best value, you can get 5 packs for £20, giving you 10 pods and saving you a few quid along the way (note, this bundle comes with a fixed selection of flavours).

Many thanks to TECC for sending the VEEV One kit in for review.

Pros
  • Easy to use
  • Cost effective
  • Good selection of flavours
  • Bundles available
Cons
  • Small battery
  • USB-C to USB-C may mean needing a new power adapter

A few days later she somehow found herself on the moderating team and is still not really sure how that happened.
