Smok Vape Pen 22 styling and build quality
The Vape Pen 22 features a nice brushed Stainless Steel finish and in terms of overall design it is quite streamlined. The device is 22mm in diameter and almost the same size as a typical mechanical mod but on the plus side of things it is less weighty.
The tank is manufactured as part of the device but only the base itself is connected so you can easily remove the glass tube and the upper top cap for cleaning. The glass feels reasonably durable and is held on by a single very thick O-ring. Should the O-ring ever start to degrade over time a single replacement is included in the box. The tank holds about 2ml of E-Liquid.
The drip tip is of the wide bore variety and made of Delrin which helps to minimise the amount of heat that reaches your lips. It can be easily removed and replaced with one of your own since the top cap does feature a standard 510 connector.
The main tube has two airflow slots that are non-adjustable and located just below the tank section. About a quarter of a way down the tube you will also find the Micro USB Port. The main fire button is nicely done and feels very responsive. There is an LED light located behind it which lights up when powering the device on and off and when firing.
The Vape Pen 22 has a 1650mAh internal battery which should be sufficient for modest users and there is a single hole in the base of the device to provide battery ventilation.
Airflow
The airflow on this device as previously mentioned features two horizontal airflow slots and they are non-adjustable. Due to this and the large wide bore drip tip it does make for a rather airy draw and mainly will suit people who enjoy a restrictive lung hitting style of vaping.
I have tried it mouth to lung myself and you can just about get away with it but I suspect it still may be far too airy for most folks. It is of course slightly better if you swap out the wide bore drip tip for a much narrower one but it certainly doesn’t suit mouth to lung as well as say the UD Tidus Kit.
Ease of use
The Vape Pen 22 is very straightforward to use and simply requires five clicks of the main fire button to power it on and off. To vape simply hold down the fire button.
Assuming the packaging information is actually correct you should receive two coils, one of which will be already fitted for you. If this is not the case like with the package I received you simply have to screw the coil into the base section of the tank. Do make sure to saturate the wicking in the coil thoroughly before vaping (there is a warning regarding this on the packaging).
This device does have a top filling system but it certainly isn’t the best one I have come across. The reason for this is that the glass sleeve press fits and is held on by an O-ring and you do have to unscrew the top cap of the tank which actually holds the entire assembly together. There is knurling on the cap to assist with unscrewing but it is important to stress that you really should hold the base of the glass as a precaution since it could come away from that O-ring if you aren’t careful. There is plenty of room for filling but make sure not to fill it completely to the top since the pressure from the top cap when fitted will displace the E-Liquid and may lead to potential leaking.
Charging is done via the included Micro USB cable and it takes about two and a half to three hours. Do be aware that there are no options to adjust the Wattage on this device and the vape you will get is determined by the Resistance of the coil in the tank.
How does it vape?
I primed the coil thoroughly and filled up the tank section with some Savage E-Liquid Norris (Blueberry Waffle and Cream). I will be honest and say that I wasn’t expecting a great deal from this device since it is essentially just a basic starter kit but surprisingly it made for a really good vape. Flavour was very impressive and the vapour production was excellent!
For some people making the switch from smoking to vaping, the cloud production is probably a bit much but for anyone who is tempted to try out a Sub Ohm tank and isn’t sure if they would like it this device will certainly make for a decent introduction. Alternatively this device would also appeal to anyone who enjoys Sub Ohm vaping and needs a more discrete device for when they are out and about.
The liquid I was using is quite high in VG and thankfully the coils do have fairly large wicking slots so you can vape thicker juices without any issues. I did get some spit back initially but I suspect this was due to putting a little too much juice on the coil since the problem did go away after a short time. Regarding the battery life I used the device reasonably often and I got about three hours out of it. More modest users will get more time out of it and chain vapers will get less. The coil itself is 0.3ohm Resistance so it will be using more power than something with a much higher Resistance like say an Aspire Mini Nautilus.
Conclusion
In my opinion this is a very good device that will certainly appeal to anyone who enjoys Sub Ohm vaping with good flavour and decent cloud production. There are of course areas it falls short namely tank capacity, non-adjustable airflow and a top filling system that could be much better designed. It also troubles me that the package did not include two coils and I do hope this is an oversight because it would be a real shame if this device only comes with a single coil.
Nevertheless in terms of the quality of vape it actually offers this is a very worthwhile product and providing you enjoy Sub Ohm vaping it might be very appealing!
