Lost Vape Centaurus G80 AIO

Will the third time be the charm for Lost Vape's latest Boro style AIO? Antony tested out the Centaurus G80 AIO to find out.

Lost Vape continues to dip its toes into the Boro mod market with the Lost Vape Centaurus G80 AIO. Their last efforts were a bit of a mixed bag with their non-standard pin arrangement so I asked our friends over at Healthcabin if I could take a peek at this and see if any improvements have been made or if it’s more of the same.

Specifications

  • 82.5 x 31.2 x 47.3mm
  • 131 grams
  • Single 18650 battery
  • 0.42’ OLED screen
  • Output 5~80 watts
  • Resistance range 0.12~2.0ohms
  • Onboard USB-C charging
  • Boro compatible

The G80 is available in six colours, and I was sent the “Space Silver” variant for the review. Healthcabin stock the international version of the kit which includes the UB AIO pod for use with their UB Ultra coils plus the rebuildable Centaurus Boro tank, if you’re purchasing from a UK vendor, you’ll get the TPD version which only contains the UB AIO stock coil tank which is worth bearing in mind. With either version, you’ll get two UB Ultra coils, a standard 510 flush nut and drip tip, an integrated drip tip, their tool for the flush nut, along with the usual paperwork and a USB-C cable.

Clearly the international version represents much better value with the inclusion of the Centaurus rebuildable tank. It’s a fairly competent RBA if this is your first foray into the world of Boro mods, but obviously not everyone is comfortable ordering from overseas, so the choice is yours. Bear in mind with the UB AIO pod, that this isn’t strictly Boro compatible as it gains its negative contact at the base and will only work with the Lost Vape “Boro” mods.

A quick look around the G80 shows that Lost Vape has gone down the currently trendy route of locating the Boro tank sideways on, this makes it quite a bit shorter front to back than a Billet Box but does add a fair bit of girth side to side, it’s also a few millimetres shorter than a billet box. The curved back section and the location make this comfortable to use left or right handed, and the largely zinc alloy gives it a reassuring heft although I would be worried that the plastic front and rear panels might be prone to cracking over time, particularly that clear front panel.

I do like that the small but practical screen remains visible even with the front cover section in place and that it also covers the up/down buttons to prevent accidental button presses. Both front and back panels are held securely in place with magnets with minimal amounts of movement so these haven’t become a fidget like many loose panels can tend to do.

The G80 uses a single 18650 battery housed in the clearly marked compartment at the rear with a spring loaded positive contact. The battery cover does leave the battery partially exposed so you might want to consider using a decorative battery wrap as I’ve done here, having said that, it still provides a decent amount of protection and seems to be relatively robust.

There is a USB-C charge port on the base of the G80 should you need to quickly top your battery up whilst you’re out and about, but as always, I’d recommend using a dedicated charger whenever possible. This base plate is plastic but should be a low wear area and shouldn’t cause any long term problems.

Up top we have the 510 thread, sadly this doesn’t use standard Billet Box threading so you’ll be stuck to the included 510 nut or integrated drip tip. The 510 nut of course works with any 510 drip tip, however I found myself gravitating towards the integrated drip tip despite this being all metal. The top entire top section is constructed from metal so there shouldn’t be any concerns about this area breaking with long term use.

OKAY, that’s the good stuff out of the way, now onto the not so good…

Lost Vape have once again gone with their proprietary two pin solution at the base of the Boro tank area rather than the standard solitary positive pin. Whilst this will work with MOST Boro tanks and bridges, it does provide a few additional challenges. This is further hampered by the position of the fire button as you now have to slide any Boro tank in sideways thereby meaning you have to get the base of any RBA past both pins. Initially I found myself frequently having to resort to depressing the connectors with a dental pick to get any RBA into position, however I soon found that using a small strip of card placed over the contacts allowed me to get any RBA place quickly and I could then pull the card away. You may need to resort to something pointy to get it back out past the pins though!

There is supposed to be a version of the Centaurus G80 with a single positive pin at the base called the G80s which would solve many of these problems, however I haven’t seen that offered for sale anywhere and I suspect that it has in fact been quietly cancelled.

The position of the power button further restricts which Boro tanks you can use. The fill plugs on the supplied UB AIO and Centaurus RBA tanks barely clear this area themselves so that’s not a great design decision! A standard Boro tank is basically unusable unless you’re in the habit of using a syringe to fill up, and many more modern tanks also use a front fill port near the top of the tank rendering them useless in this application. Ideally you want to use a tank that has a side fill option, and I found myself using a crypt V2 tank so you may need to factor in the cost of a side fill Boro tank with any purchase.

Having complained vociferously about these poor design choices, once you find a tank/RBA combination that works, it performs well, making the G80 a great daily driver option when you want to leave your more expensive Boro mods at home.

Conclusion

This is Lost Vape’s third attempt at a Boro mod but their insistence on using that non-standard connection at the base once again limits which Boro tanks and RBAs that the Centaurus G80 will work with which is then further compounded by the position of the fire button. Having said that, I have enjoyed using the G80 kit and it is fairly inexpensive so it might be a good option if you want a beater mod, provided you can look past its obvious flaws.

Many thanks to Healthcabin for sending the Lost Vape Centaurus G80 AIO out for review.

Pros
  • Inexpensive Boro option
  • Good hand feel suitable for both left and right handed use
Cons
  • Non-standard contacts and button position limit the compatibility with other tanks and RBAs

I was a twenty a day smoker for 25 years and like most smokers I was always going to quit "next week". Having hit my mid forties and having the usual smokers cough and difficulty with anything more than moderate exercise it was obviously time to give up the cancer sticks. I bought my first e-cigarette in 2013 when they were expensive, difficult to find and quite frankly... crap. I used it for about a week then went back to the roll ups, mark up another failed quit attempt. The fact that I had just changed jobs and was under quite a lot of stress probably didn't help. Move on to 2016 and whilst I was browsing eBay I noticed that one of the suggested items that would occasionally pop up was for a cheap e-cigarette. It looked similar to the one I'd bought 3 years earlier but it was only £5 (about 8 times cheaper than before) so I decided to give it another go on a whim. Once the kit arrived I managed to gradually replace the cigarettes with my new kit over a two month period and got into watching YouTube reviews for newer kit. My cheap and cheerful kit was replaced by a more upmarket affair, and being a noob I made a mistake once it arrived... I put in the supplied direct lung coil, this was of course a complete revelation and I haven't touched a cigarette since. Oh and I no longer spend the first five minutes of every day having a coughing fit either.
