Innokin iTaste Kroma styling and build quality

The first thing you notice about the Kroma is a stylish and eye-catching design. Innokin have definitely paid attention to its looks and it sports a very fashionable appearance. I liked the little touches such as the red stripe which goes well with the black tinted display and the main white finish. Sometimes when I look at this device the futuristic appearance kind of makes me think that it would be ideal as some kind of space shuttle accessory!

What is also really nice about this device is that it is highly compact and it feels extremely comfortable to hold in the hand due to it being very well rounded. The rear section where you hold the device has a knurled section and this helps you to maintain a secure grip. The painted finish is lovely and has not shown any signs of wear in the short amount of time I have spent using this device. The white one I received for review is especially classy but there are a nice amount of colour options available should you prefer something different.

What’s more the Kroma is also very pocket friendly and ideal to carry around. Weight wise it is not especially heavy but even so the lightweight alloy construction makes it feel pretty sturdy so it should last you some time. Most of the weight is likely a result of the devices internal 2000mAh battery. The device can be charged via the included Micro USB Cable and the port is located directly beneath the top adjustment buttons. The battery has no obvious venting but I never noticed the device becoming especially hot so I assume it vents via seams in the casing.

The device features three buttons which seem to be made from plastic but thankfully they are a good fit, responsive and do not rattle. The main fire button features the trademark LED behind it which alerts you to the current battery charge level. The 510 connector is actually recessed and this serves to hide the majority of the included Slipstream tank from view so it does tend to look more like the device is fitted with a low profile RDA. Should you prefer to actually use your own tank or dripper with the Kroma you will need to make use of the included 510 adapter.

Assuming you are using the Slipstream the Kroma has a small viewing window which allows you to keep an eye on the current juice level. The only problem with this is that it can be a bit hard to tell if you aren’t actually in direct light so in most cases I simply unscrewed the tank to check or opened the top cap.

The main OLED display is located on one side of the device and while it is nicely set out it can be somewhat troublesome to read in strong sunlight due to the dark tinted screen protector. The display features all of the typical information you would expect including Resistance, Wattage, Temperature and current battery level. In addition there is also a puff counter should you wish to make use of it. The Kroma is limited to a 15 second draw (cannot be adjusted) so will cut off after this point.

Innokin Slipstream Tank

The Slipstream tank has a very straightforward minimalist design but it is nicely colour coordinated depending on which version of the iTaste Kroma you purchase. In compliance with the EU TPD directive the tank holds 2ml of juice.

The drip tip is made from Delrin and features a standard 510 connector so you can easily swap it for another one from your collection. There is also an alternative Stainless Steel drip tip included in the box if you would prefer to use that. The Slipstream airflow consists of three small Cyclops style slots that can be left fully opened up or closed down heavily. At its most open the airflow caters to a restrictive lung inhale style of vaping and this becomes increasingly restrictive the more you close it down to the point where you can kind of enjoy it as a mouth to lung vape (some vapers may prefer more restriction so ideally try it if you can).

The tank is made from Stainless Steel with an anodized painted finish and also has a Pyrex glass sleeve insert. There are two juice windows and a small icon between them which serves as a guide to how far you should fill the tank.  The Slipstream has a top filling design and a child proof cap which works just like a typical juice bottle since you simply press down and turn it anticlockwise.

The coil is actually attached to the top cap and not the base of the tank so you do need to take care when filling or the coil will displace the juice when you refit the top. There is tons of room in there for your juice bottle nozzles or droppers just remember not to fill higher than the marked position on the tank or your device will end up coated in E-Liquid.

Lastly the Slipstream features a silver plated non-adjustable 510 pin.

Ease of use

I have pretty much covered everything you need to know about the Slipstream Tank so I will only cover the Kroma here. The manual is very thorough and should be easily understand by a newcomer to vaping.

  • Three Clicks of the fire button switches the device on/off.
  • Cycle through menu modes by holding down the plus button and the fire button.
  • To adjust the Wattage or Temperature hold down either the plus or minus button for a couple of seconds until the display starts flashing then use the plus or minus buttons to suit.
  • To adjust the Wattage in Temperature Control Mode press and hold the minus button and the fire button.
  • To flip the screen display hold the plus and minus button.
  • Just like other Innokin devices the fire button has a small LED behind it and this gives you a visual indication to the current battery charge level. Green is fully charged. Yellow is half power. Red is low power and requires charging.
  • When fitting any atomizer to the Kroma the device will automatically detect a new coil and ask you to confirm you chosen coil material. Should you make an error the coil selection can be adjusted by holding the fire button and the plus button down simultaneously for three seconds. Confirm selections by pressing the fire button.

Innokin iTaste Kroma performance

I have to admit I have really enjoyed using the Kroma because it feels really good in the hand and is easily carried around. The Slipstream actually offers a fairly decent vape since it is certainly quite flavoursome. The only issue I found with it is that it does produce a fair bit of spit back when the tank is quite full and the pre-fitted Kanthal coil was a disappointment since it burnt out within a day of use.

To be honest I have never been that enamoured with the longevity of Innokin’s Kanthal coils which is why I always stuck to using the Stainless Steel or Clapton coils in their iSub tanks which always tended to last much longer. The included Stainless Steel coil which comes in the box offers a superior vape to the Kanthal coil and even after several refills is still going strong so I would advise you stock up on these coils or at least buy a pack if you should purchase this device.

In terms of vapour production the Slipstream certainly puts out a decent amount considering its small airflow slots. Refilling was fairly hassle free as long as I remembered to pay attention to the marked juice level on the side of the tank.I cannot fault the device itself since the excellent Aethon chip offers superb performance in both Variable Wattage and Temperature Control. When using the Stainless Steel coils in Temperature Control I got a consistently great vape and never encountered a single dry hit. Battery life is decent, lasting most of the day assuming you are only vaping modestly in the 40W region and not chain vaping. The battery also charges fairly quickly due to the 2A fast charge capability and since the device supports Pass Through you can happily vape while it is charging.

All in all there are really only two issues that I have with this device. Firstly the screen protector makes the display very hard to read outside. The second issue is the included 510 adapter and the 510 tool because it doesn’t feel especially convenient. The better option is to actually fit the adaptor to your tank or dripper first before you screw it into place. The only problem with this is that the adaptor sometimes unscrews when you remove your RTA or RDA from the device. In many ways it isn’t that big a deal because in some respects it is really only an extra option that Innokin have provided and you don’t have to use it if you don’t want to. Nevertheless part of me feels it would have been better if the device was more conveniently flexible if it is to appeal to a wide audience.

Conclusion

Attractively stylish, very compact and built with ease of use in mind the Innokin iTaste Kroma is a quality device that is well worth checking out. It does have some minor issues which I have touched on in my review but in terms of the solid performance it offers I cannot actually fault it!
