What’s in the Box?

The Innokin iTaste Hunter Kit comes in a nondescript cardboard box loaded with almost enough gear to get you going, you just need to supply e-liquid and a suitable 18650 battery, inside the kit you have the Innokin iTaste Hunter mod itself, the Innokin iSub V tank with a removable Delrin drip tip, two 0.5ohm SS316L iSub coil heads, a vape band, spare o-rings, a detailed user manual and a battery safety leaflet containing detailed advice on battery safety, The battery safety leaflet is a brilliant idea and given there have been a couple of news stories recently around venting 18650 batteries thanks to user error, this is something I would love to see other manufacturers doing.

Design and build quality

Available in six different colour finishes, with red, desert, white, black, blue and green available, the Innokin iTaste Hunter sports a ruggedized styling that stands up to everyday wear and tear. It is fairly chunky, but still small and portable, measuring in at 89mm x 50mm x 25mm, and it’s actually quite comfortable to hold. The styling will polarize opinion, I’m not a huge fan of the looks personally, but function takes precedence over form here.

A spring loaded 510 connector is found at the top of the iTaste Hunter which allows your tank to sit flush on the mod with no gap between the connector and your atomiser. You’ll also see a small lanyard fitting at the top of the device, allowing you to clip it onto a lanyard. At the base of the device is a twist off battery cap, with a battery venting hole, this has very smooth threading and twists off easily allowing you to insert an 18650 battery. On the front of the device you’ll find the power button as well as the plus and minus buttons, which operate with a tactile click, and at the side of the device near the top is a clear circular OLED screen.

Included with the kit is the iSub V Vortex edition, which is manufactured from stainless steel with a pyrex glass tank section, this has a removable delrin drip tip at the top, is top filled, has a wide range of different airflow settings supporting both mouth to lung and direct lung hits (dependent on the coil resistance used, and Innokin’s no spill coil swap system is present here. This allows you to swap coils quickly and easily, as the 510 connector is built into the base of the coil head rather than the tank itself, you simply invert the iSub V Vortex, unscrew the base of the tank, slide the old coil head out, and the new one in.

As a side note, I felt that the iSub V Vortex edition is a great fit for the iTaste Hunter, these two do pair very well together.

Using the Innokin iTaste Hunter Starter Kit

Traditionally, Innokin devices are simple to use, designed to be as user friendly as possible. Before you get started and fire up the device, you’ll want to make sure that you have fully primed the iSub V Vortex tank ready for use. To do this, simply unscrew the top cap on the iSub V Vortex tank, fill it with juice, and allow it to stand for at least 5 minutes, so that juice soaks into the coil head fully. After this, insert an 18650 battery by unscrewing the battery cap and sliding the battery in positive side up, then replace the battery cap. You are now ready to use the device, and the functions are as follows-

  • 3 clicks turn the iTaste Hunter on and off
  • After attaching your atomiser to the iTaste Hunter, you’ll be prompted to enter whether it was the same coil as what was previously used, a Nickel Coil, Titanium or Stainless Steel coil head (Ni, Ti or SS), you will go into temperature control mode if you select any of those, or by selecting ‘W’ for wattage you will go into wattage mode regardless.
  • If you wish to use the supplied SS316L coil head in TC mode you must select ‘SS’ or stainless steel when attaching the iSub V Vortex tank, which will set the device to temperature control, or if you would prefer to use it in wattage mode then select ‘W’ for wattage.
  • The device, tank, coil and e-liquid should all be at room temperature for correct resistance calibration.
  • You can also bring up the coil selection options during use by holding the power and plus buttons down for three seconds, if you continue to hold these buttons down you will cycle through the options.
  • Holding plus or minus down until the screen begins to flash will allow you to adjust the power setting in wattage mode or temperature setting when in temperature control. Hit power to select your setting.
  • Holding plus and minus together for three seconds will flip the screen orientation.
  • To switch the display between celsius and fahrenheit, scroll all the way through either range.
  • Holding the power and minus buttons down in temperature control will allow you to change the wattage pre-boost setting, allowing you to increase or decrease the ramp up time with your coil head.
  • Holding plus and minus down will display a puff counter, ohm resistance down to five decimal places, and remaining battery voltage.
  • A 15 second cut off is built in, so if the power button is held down continuously for 15 seconds then the power will cut off.
  • Low battery voltage protection is built in, so if the battery voltage drops below 3.5V the mod will turn off.
  • Check atomiser protection is built in, so if there is an error with the coil or no atomiser is detected, check atomiser will be displayed on screen and the iTaste Hunter will not fire.
  • Short circuit/atomiser protection is built in, to protect against low resistance and shorted builds.
  • If the board gets too hot, overheating protection will kick in and ‘TOO HOT’ will be displayed on screen.

Reverse polarity protection is built in, so if the battery is inserted upside down the iTaste Hunter will not switch on or fire.

Performance

As with the Innokin Coolfire IV TC 18650, there is 75W of output power available with the iTaste Hunter, and resistance is read in wattage mode down to 0.1ohm, so there is plenty of power available here for the vast majority of users. This also means that this will fire all known popular sub ohm tanks, so if you fancy using a different tank to the supplied iSub V Vortex, rest assured this mod will fire it. The more power used the quicker the battery level will decrease, this will last around a day at 30-35W in wattage mode, however the battery life will decrease substantially at higher wattage.

The AETHON chipset gives great performance in temperature control, and it’s one of the best chipsets out there that I have used for temperature control. It’s stable, reliable and accurate, with a consistent temperature control vape provided each and every time. I’d like to see a custom TCR input included in future Innokin releases featuring this chipset, but for now it performs just fine with Nickel, Titanium and Stainless Steel

The iSub V Vortex edition is a superb little tank, capacity is a little on the small side at 3ml, and you will get through that quickly, however the performance of this tank is brilliant. It’s one the best sub ohm clearomisers I have used when it comes to flavour, and the included SS316L iSub coils are excellent. In wattage mode, you get a much warmer and intense vape, however I preferred the slightly more relaxed vape in temperature control with the same coil heads. There are a lot of different airflow options present and you can even mouth to lung hit with this tank, using closed down airflow and some of the higher resistance iSub coil heads.

Conclusion

If you aren’t fussed about style, and would prefer a set up that offers top notch stable performance, than the Innokin iTaste Hunter is an excellent kit to consider. The iTaste Hunter mod itself will stand up to the day to day use you can throw at it, and the included iSub V tank provides an excellent vape. If you are looking for something you can bash around a bit, this is definitely the kit for you!
