Here’s something interesting; an e-liquid range aimed at tempting disposable users away and onto more sustainable vape kits. I’m well up for this, love 'em or hate 'em, disposables generally give a superb flavour vape which so far has been tough to match.
There are 10 flavours in the VLTZ range which include:
- Banana Ice - Banana, Menthol
- Blueberry Ice - Blueberries, Menthol
- Blue Razz Lemonade - Blueberries, Raspberry, Lemonade
- Bubblegum - Bubblegum
- Cola Ice - Cola, Menthol
- Energy Ice - Energy Drink, Menthol
- Grape - Grape
- Peach Ice - Peach, Menthol (coming soon)
- Sour Apple - Apple
- Sweet Strawberry – Strawberry
They are a high PG ratio 60PG/40VG which is thinner than traditional MTL e-liquids (usually 50/50), and PG carries more flavour than vapour production and 18mg (1.8% strength).
The VLTZ range come in 10ml chubby soft squeeze bottles, the bottles are my favourite of any that I’ve tried as they are high quality, not too stiff to squeeze, and have a rigid long nozzle (I often wash and re-use these for shortfill top-ups).
The flavour names are plain and to the point so that you know what to expect, and they are all flavours that disposable users will be familiar with, they are all on the sweet side and there’s no tobacco type flavours.
Disposable vs Refillable/Reusable
There are so many reasons that re-usable vapes are so much better than disposables; less environmental impact, more sustainable, more cost effective, more reliable, longer battery life, and just ethically better. But one of the bigger hurdles that reusables have had to face is the actual vape that disposables offer, I have test a LOT of disposables in the past and as much as I disagree with them, I cannot dispute they give a really strong flavour which I have never replicated with regular e-liquids. There’s a couple of reasons for this; disposables use a very high PG flavouring and a different coil and wicking method to regular vapes, plus the coil doesn’t need to last long so the over-sweetened flavours have little impact on ruining the coil.
Totally Wicked have been addressing this problem and have produced a range of high PG e-liquids that should hopefully bridge the gap and make re-usable vape hardware a more attractive option. Our friends over at TECC have also been working behind the scenes to find suitable vape hardware and pods that will work well with this range.
The hardware I used for all of the VLTZ range is the Eleaf IORE Prime pod kit using the 0.8ohm pods, using the right kit really matters when using this range of e-liquids as not all pods suit high PG concentrated flavours. TECC so far recommend two kits, but we will focus on the IORE Prime for now. You can get hold of one from TECC:
https://www.theelectroniccigarette.co.uk/eleaf-iore-prime-kit
£19.99 with 2 free e-liquids (VLTZ range not currently included)
And the 0.8ohm pods:
https://www.theelectroniccigarette.co.uk/eleaf-iore-prime-pods
£6.99 for 2 *Make sure you select the 0.8ohm option and NOT the 1.2ohm.
Now you may be thinking that it’s all getting pricey compared to a cheapo disposable BUT this is just the initial outlay, the IORE Prime battery is reusable/rechargeable and will last you a very long time, the pods are refillable for at least 10ml of eliquid.
Basically 1 x 10ml bottle is the equivalent e-liquid to at least five disposables (you often don’t get the whole 2ml from disposables before the battery dies), doing some basic maths you can start to see the savings straight away and it only gets cheaper after the initial outlay:
- 1 x IORE Prime kit = £19.99 (Which includes a 0.8ohm pod and a 1.2ohm pod)
- 1 x Eliquid = £4.99
- Total = £24.98
This will give you the equivalent of 5 x disposables for 25 quid and you get to re-use the battery so it’s already a good deal, costs after that are:
- 1 x 10ml VLTZ ELiquid = £4.99
- 2 x 0.8ohm IORE Pods = £6.99
- Total = £11.98
Still equivalent to 5 x disposables but it gets even cheaper as you already have a second pod and you just need a 10ml bottle of VLTZ, so the next purchase is
- 1 x 10ml bottle of VLTZ = £4.99
So this purchase works out at a bargain equivalent of £1 for 2ml
But the best way to buy is get two bottles of VLTZ whenever you buy 2 x pods which keeps everything lasting the same time:
- 2 x 10ml VLTZ Eliquid = £9.98
- 2 x 0.8ohm IORE Pods = £6.99
- Total = £16.97
It works out the equivalent of 10 x disposables, so it’s a bit of a no-brainer and you’re no longer throwing electronics away, win-win for sure.
As for the actual device; the Eleaf IORE Prime is a superb little pod kit, it is still as simple to use as a disposable and uses the same ‘auto-draw’, but you get a longer battery life and adjustable airflow. You can also see your e-liquid level so there’s no guessing as to when it will run out. It charges with a USB-C cable which is included but it is the same as most phones and tablets so it’s easy to top-up charge, and the pod is really easy to refill as you just flip the mouthpiece off with your thumb and fill via the Red marked hole.
Hopefully you can see by now that this is a much better way to go, little effort for a lot of reward, ethically and economically better, with a nice bit of vaping hardware into the bargain.
So that’s the maths, hardware, and reasons to switch out of the way, how do the e-liquids stack up? Like this………..
Here are my personal opinions on the range of flavours:
Banana Ice - Banana, Menthol
Creamy banana finished with ice for a cool throat hit
I was off to a good start already with this one and a trend would become apparent; the brief description above was spot on “Creamy banana finished with ice for a cool throat hit” and it’s simply that. The ‘ice’ kick wasn’t too strong and gave a pleasant aftertaste.
Blueberry Ice - Blueberries, Menthol
Juicy summer blueberries mixed with ice cold menthol
I’m not a fan of blueberries on their own but the ‘ice’ kick makes this flavour rather nice, it’s quite sweet but creates a really pleasant aftertaste and it turns out I do like Blueberries.
Blue Razz Lemonade - Blueberries, Raspberry, Lemonade
Sweet and zesty lemonade layered with juicy blueberries and tangy raspberries
This flavour profile is one of my favourites from disposables so I was glad to see that it tastes the same as I remember it, a trend was starting to show as in you can trust the flavour description.
Bubblegum – Bubblegum
Enjoy a moment of nostalgia with this classic, fruity rush of bubblegum
Guess what this tasted like? Yep Bubblegum! Similar to Hubba Bubba style gum but I did find this flavour a little overpowering to vape all day every day, it’s good as a treat though.
Cola Ice - Cola, Menthol
Classic cola taste with an ice cold finish
How do I describe Cola? Erm, well, yeah, it’s just cola with a slight ice kick. It’s actually quite a nice one but a little too sweet for my tastes, but as with the rest of this range, it is faithful to the disposables flavour.
Energy Ice - Energy Drink, Menthol
A sweet energy drink taste with fruity notes and a cooling ice menthol
Another one that’s tricky to describe unless you’ve tasted ‘energy drinks’ before, but it’s a firm favourite in disposables and for good reason. As a vape flavour it works really well and tastes better than the actual drink in my opinion, this was one of my favourites and suits an everyday vape.
Grape – Grape
Layers of sweet and juicy grapes with a slight tang
Grape is another popular flavour and again this is another one that suits vaping. The slight tang is welcome as it tones down the sweetness a little to make it an everyday vape, another one of my favourites.
Sour Apple – Apple
Fresh green apples delivering a crisp and tangy taste
I tend to avoid ‘Sour’ flavours but in the case of this flavour, it really helped to make it less overpowering. It’s still fairly sweet but the aftertaste is really nice and moreish.
Sweet Strawberry – Strawberry
Freshly picked strawberries delivering a taste of summer
This is unmistakably ‘strawberry’ from the scent to the vape it is faithful to the fruit but it was a bit too sweet for me, similar to strawberry’s dipped in sugar which is nice as a treat but not one I would choose as an all-day vape.
With the exception of the Peach Ice which wasn’t quite ready in time for the review, the VLTZ range has done a good job in bridging that gap to disposables, and as it says on the box; Extreme Flavour sums them up as they are the strongest flavours I have experienced so far. All of them are on the sweet side so if you have a sweet-tooth or prefer sweeter e-liquids, then these should be right up your street.
There’s one thing to consider compared to disposables and that’s that using the 0.8ohm pods. You will get a more intense vape per puff as it will be at least 50% more power so a shorter puff will give you more than you would get from a lower powered disposable, I haven’t been able to test any higher ohms pods or coils yet but less power might be better. It’s early days yet, but here’s the pods I know that work so far:
Joyetech EVIO C using a 0.8ohm coil, the Eleaf IORE Prime with 0.8ohm pod (as used in this review) and my favourite; the Joyetech OBLIQ which uses the same coils as the EVIO C, but more advanced vapers might find the VLT range will suit MTL RTAs and that is what I will be trying them out on next.
Thank you to TECC for letting us try these e-liquids out.
