Recently we have been inundated with disposable style bar salts type e-liquids, big flavour, super sweet, chilled, and ultimately safe and dare I say it, a little boring! I mean blu razz is all well and good, but there is only so much you can do to keep things exciting, and I have found myself missing that quality of well-crafted juice that is getting harder to find. Maybe I’m just jaded, I mean I have been vaping for just over fifteen years now, and I’ve seen styles come and styles go, but one thing that will always be timeless is finely made gourmet e-liquids. Thankfully there are still companies out there who understand this and still hold on to the ethos of creating beautiful flavour aimed at those of us who appreciate the good stuff, so I was delighted when Red Vape got in touch to see if we’d like to check out three brand new flavours in their Reserva range.
Red Vape are a company who stand for all of the values I admire in an e-liquid manufacturer. They use the finest ingredients, and you absolutely can tell. They are also an ethical brand who won’t use anything that could cause harm to the environment, not palm oils here! You also won’t find any artificial nasties hidden in the ingredients, and all of their liquids have been thoroughly tested for quality and safety. They rightly take their craft very seriously, and this is evident in the end product.
The Reserva range is exclusively tobacco based. They start by selecting some of the finest tobaccos from around the world, picked for flavour and sustainability, which are then put through a process of cold maceration which extracts all the flavour, all the subtle notes and characteristics to produce their unique naturally extracted e-liquids. You won’t find any extra tobacco additive flavours to bolster anything, this is the real deal. It is also a process which takes time, you can’t rush perfection after all. After extraction, the e-liquids are then steeped to fully age them which brings out every ounce of depth and complexity, and also means that as soon as your bottles drop through the letterbox, they are ripe and ready to vape straight away.
The Reserva range is a pure mouth to lung e-liquid designed for maximum flavour, so they are all 50% PG/50% VG. Whilst they produce ample amounts of clouds, you won’t want to subohm them. These are flavours to savour so make sure you pair them with suitable hardware. I pulled out my Vinegar Works Antiquity V2 dripper and knocked up a standard 1.06ohm coil, and this was perfect. Any coil from 0.8ohm up works really well though, I did fill up my Asmodus Minikin Pod with a 0.8ohm coil and the results were still superb. So you don’t need to use high end gear to get the best from these flavours, but it never hurts to have some nice shinies for a bit of extra luxury.
The Flavours
Currently there are nine flavours in the Reserva range, but we are just looking at the latest three. Red Vape originally reached out back in July of last year to book this review, but the final product didn’t arrive until nearly Christmas. Normally I am an impatient person and delays can annoy me, but when it comes to e-liquid, I really appreciate them holding back and not releasing these until they were completely happy with the end product. Not only does the e-liquid benefit from it, but it also shows that Red Vape have really high standards and are not prepared to compromise to turn a quick buck.
Mapacho
“Red Vape’s Mapacho tobacco e-liquid uses naturally extracted Mapacho, which grows wild in the jungles of Peru. A rich tobacco variety offering a subtle sweetness and creamy flavour”
The first thing that hit me was the intensity of the colour of this juice, it is deep reddish amber which is really quite beautiful. It also makes it look like it could be quite heavy and intense, but looks can be deceiving. Taking a quick sniff as I was loading up my dripper, I got a natural sweetness, almost like a maple syrup, with undertones of fresh tobacco, it smells wonderful. On to the actual flavour, and it was not what I expected, but in a good way. It is a naturally sweet flavour, but in an organic way, and the sweetness compliments the mellow tobacco leaf that cuts under. It is light and very clean tasting but also has that unmistakable feel you get with NET e-liquids. It is an easy going vape, and one I can easily vape all day as it is delicate yet full flavoured. I’d say this is a great option if you are new to real tobacco e-liquids too as it isn’t dark or challenging.
Viñales
“The sumptuous Viñales naturally extracted tobacco e-liquid delivers a true taste of Cuba. Named after the stunning Viñales valley, home to the fertile tobacco plantations where the world’s finest tobacco leaves are grown”
Viñales is a much paler e-liquid, and I was surprised by the smell as I expected it to be a lot more instant, but the scent is subtle. You really get the smell of a natural fresh leaf, but it doesn’t give much more away than that. The flavour is much stronger, it has real body behind it. The flavour also builds through the inhale, making it intense and yet it still keeps a lightness making it easy to keep vaping. It has a full throat feel too, smooth but with a satisfying kick. It is a lovely sensation. It is also a pure tobacco flavour with no obvious extra sweetness other than what is present in the leaf, you are getting the complete profile of the actual tobacco. I expected something headier which its Cuban connection, but the balance is just right between complexity and cleanness.
Maduro
“Maduro is a naturally extracted tobacco e-liquid derived from Habano cigar wrapper tobacco leaves, A truly authentic cigar tobacco e-liquid delivering a deep throat hit and an earthy and nutty aftertaste. A superior liquid that only true tobacco connoisseurs can fully appreciate”
This is another lighter coloured e-liquid, with may be a touch more golden shining when the light catches it. On the sniff test, you really get the nutty notes on top of the leaf. This flavour seems to go through some extra aging processes to really bring out an authentic cigar feel. I would say it succeeds too; this is a much more hardcore flavour. It starts off quite light, but this builds quickly into a different animal. It is a much earthier flavour with quite a lot going on. There is also a sort of greenness that really only makes sense if you drink fine quality tea, it’s not quite vegetal but is going in that direction. Again, there is a natural but subtle sweetness which comes from the pure leaf, but the thing that really stands out to me is the feel. This is definitely the boldest of the three when it comes to the throat hit, it is not hard or harsh, but it is robust. Normally I don’t go for more intense tobaccos, but the flavour is so natural that I find myself wanting more.
Final Thoughts
These new Reserva flavours are the real deal, mature tobacco flavours for people who enjoy something a little more challenging. This doesn’t mean they are unapproachable though, and I think even non tobacco vapers will find things they enjoy here, especially with the Mapacho. More hardcore tobacco fans will love all of these though, the flavours are fantastic, each with its own very distinct style, and that mouth feel and throat hit are sublime.
If you fancy giving these or any of the Reserva range a try, you can pick them up from Red Vape direct. They are £6.95 for 10ml, and you can chose between 3mg to 18mg. This puts them in the higher price bracket than most 10ml bottles, but you are paying for something that is a bit special here, and I feel they are worth every penny.
Many thanks to Red Vape for sending in the new Reserva flavours for review.
- Beautifully crafted flavours
- No artificial flavours
- Pure, clean taste
- Slightly more expensive, but can you really put a price on quality?
