GeekVape Wenax M Kit

A vape kit that can last all week? What is this madness? Well it's the new GeekVape Wenax M pod kit, of course!

Vaping has changed a lot over the last few years, from being a largely hobbyist driven alternative to smoking with complicated gear requiring at least a basic understanding of electronic theory and battery safety, to being something anyone can do just by popping to their nearest convenience shop to pick up a disposable vape which you can just unwrap and go. but I think my favourite new change is the slowly building trend for small pen mods which come with their own power bank which gives you the best of all worlds. This isn’t a totally new invention, but recently we have seen a few brands absolutely nail the format, and this time we are going to look at GeekVape’s take on it with their new Wenax M kit courtesy of our good friends at TECC.

The GeekVape Wenax M is firmly aimed at the newer vapers who will want something easy to use but that can still deliver the high levels of flavour that we all have come to expect these days, but that doesn’t mean it won’t pick up fans from old hands who just don’t want the faff anymore. I fall in to that category nicely, I’ve been vaping for coming up to 15 years now, I’ve seen trends come and go, and I have more tools, wires, wicks, and gadgets in my tool box than I care to remember, but these days, I just want something solid, dependable, and tasty, and whilst this may be jumping ahead a bit, I can happily report that the Wenax M hits the mark on all fronts. But let’s take things back to basics first.

Unboxing and First Impressions

The GeekVape Wenax M comes in a rather snazzy presentation box, decked out in the orange and silver house brand colour scheme that should set it apart on the shelf. It has an outer sliding sleeve which shows a picture of your kit on the front with a sticker to let you know your colour choice, leaving the back free for the highlights, a contents list, warnings and legal disclaimers, and a massive nicotine warning. The sides are a lot more minimalist, with just the brand name on one side and the social links on the other.

Sliding this off, you first find a sleeve containing the warranty card and well written instruction manual, and under that you get the that all important first look at your kit, safely housed in a white blown plastic tray. I was sent the Earth Art variant, which comes with a sort of wood effect textured wrap on the power pack and a semi matt black finish on the device, but you can also choose Carbon Grey or Moonlit Silver. The pen comes with a 0.8ohm pod fitted, but you will need to remove it to take of the sticker which stops the pod and device from connecting.

Under this tray, there is another layer of goodies which include a second 1.2ohm pod, a pack of filter tips, and a USB-C to C cable, so basically you get everything you need to get you going.

I am not going to list the specs as quite honestly I don’t think I need to here; it is a very simple kit and any numbers you need will be covered as we move on.

Getting Started

The Wenax M comes with a good amount of charge from the get-go, so you can get vaping straight away, but it is good practice to completely charge it up before you take your first puff. This is done by lining up the pins on the power bank with the three dots on the pen, and then the magnets take over to help snap it into place. You will know when you have it right, not only because the magnets won’t be doing their thing, but also when it first connects, you will feel a vibration letting you know that things are properly paired.  A small light will come on at the front of the pen, the colour will depend on your level of charge (green 100%-71%, blue 70%-31%, and white 30%-0%), and you can just leave it there until it is done. There is also a light on the top of the power bank which lets you know the status of the big battery, so you know when that needs to be topped up. GeekVape reckon you should get a week’s worth of vaping from one full charge of the pack, but when you need to charge it, you just take the included cable and plug it in to a suitable adapter. It goes without saying that you shouldn’t leave it unattended whilst charging, it is just good practice to do that with any rechargeable device.

Once you are charged and ready to go, you can put the power bank away and get on with filling. This is done by removing the pod from the pen so you can access the fill port. The pod is held in place by a small clip which fits in a groove on the collar of the pod housing, and it holds very tight so you will need to be quite forceful. I am so used to magnets that I was a bit nervous about giving it a good yank at first, but you really do need to be forceful. At least it means you shouldn’t have any trouble with things coming apart accidentally. Once you have wrestled it out, you can then see the silicone fill port cover, just get your fingernail under it and you can finally access the filling hole which is perfectly suited to 10ml bottle tips. Fill her up, and then hold tight for a few minutes for everything to soak in, and then you will be ready to take a vape.

This is a very basic set up so you can’t change anything, no airflow control or power adjustments, and to be honest it doesn’t need them as the vape is spot on as standard. The only thing you can change is the drip tip/ mouthpiece as you can either use the black plastic “traditional” tip or you can use one of the included cigarette filter style ones. I have been really surprised, as someone who has always had a drip tip fetish, just how well these new generation pen kits work with the filters, and the Wenax M is no different. In fact, now the novelty has worn off, I actually really like the feel of filter tips, it makes me feel a wave of nostalgia. More importantly, it is a great option for someone coming straight from smoking as it will keep things familiar and will help the transition to vaping. It changes the way you vape as you have to take a tighter puff rather than the usual mouthful that you take with a regular drip tip. For me, it has taken me back to the reason I started to vape in the first place, to stop smoking. I take smaller puffs too, so my e-liquid is lasting longer, which is a nice extra bonus.

The Vape

I’ve tried a few of these style kits now, and I have been surprised that they do all vape ever so slightly differently. The Wenax M is a little airier, so you get less resistance when using the filter tips. It also means you get more of a mouthful if you are using the drip tip. It is an easy, relaxed vape.

There are two different M1 pods included with the kit, so you can try them both before you need to decide what to stock up on moving forward. I started with the pre fitted 0.8ohm pod which will be the best choice if you vape nic salts, and the flavour was impressively full. I was getting every ounce of taste from my e-liquid, and none of the detail was lost. This was very impressive, and I could happily use this as a main kit due to the quality of the flavour.

Switching to the 1.2ohm pod, I found the pod itself was a slightly tighter fit for some reason, so it needed even more force to place it and remove it. I am not sure why there is a difference in tolerance, but it still fits so it’s not too much of a problem unless you have weaker wrists. This pod will work a bit better with freebase e-liquid, but you will still want to stick with 50PG/50VG to get the best performance and flavour. The temperature difference was noticeable, this being a cooler vape, not that the 0.8ohm was hot, but this was a much more subtle vape. The flavour was still good, but it wasn’t quite as impressive. Everything seems a slightly reserved compared to the first pod. It is a perfectly serviceable vape, but it isn’t going to change the world. The 0.8ohm is definitely the pod to go for though, but that is just my opinion, and thankfully, because you get the two pods in the kit, you can try for yourself and make your own mind up

Final Thoughts

GeekVape have a reputation for making hard wearing, good looking kits that produce a really great vape, and the Wenax M kit definitely follows that trend. The vape is rock solid, especially with the 0.8ohm pod, it is just so tasty. The kit looks smart, and the way the pen fits with the battery pack has been well implemented. Whilst the battery in the pen is a small 400mAh, this doesn’t really mean anything with this kind of kit as the battery pack will be doing the heavy lifting here.

It isn’t perfect though. The magnetic charging points on the pen are very strong, so if you keep it in your pocket, make sure you don;t keep anything else metal near it, as it will hold on to it. The 1.2ohm pod is good, but nothing spectacular, and the tight fit means it may not be the best choice for some. I was going to give this to my mum who is just trying to quit smoking (again!) as these format kits are perfect for her, but I know she wouldn’t be able to manage to remove the pod for filling. What a shame, I guess I’m just going to have to keep it for myself!

If you would like to try the GeekVape Wenax M, you can pick the complete kit up from TECC for £34.99 and that includes 2 free 10ml bottles of e-liquid, and spare M1 pods are £8.99 for 4.

Many thanks to TECC for sending the GeekVape Wenax M kit in for review.
