Despite notions that e-cigarette users are careless about their mental and physical health, the NHS recommends e-cigarettes as a tool to stop smoking, due to the harmful toxins in traditional cigarettes. Looking at how vapers approach wellness and ‘self-care’, a survey by retailer Vape Superstore finds that most vapers are health-conscious and drink little alcohol.
The NHS states that cigarettes increase anxiety and that adults with depression are much more likely to smoke than adults without depression.
In light of this, Vape Superstore surveyed 2,660 e-cigarette users to discover how they approach their wellness in relation to alcohol, fitness, supplements, and sleep.
When it comes to alcohol, the survey found that 21% of vapers are sober and 22% drink alcohol less than once a month. Just 2% of respondents said they drink every day.
The company said: “Out of all non-alcoholic drinks, 50% of vapers prefer mocktails, making them the most popular, closely followed by non-alcoholic beer, with 43% making it their drink of choice.”
On fitness, it was found that 28% do not have a regular fitness routine and only 14% exercise daily. However, dog walking is the most popular exercise amongst e-cigarette users, with 2 in 5 doing so. Anecdotally, a number of ex-smoker harm reduction advocates post about their mountain climbing and long distance cycling since they switched away from tobacco use.
Three quarters of respondents said they do not use any dietary supplements. Of those who do, vitamins and minerals (such as Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, iron, magnesium, calcium, etc) are the most popular supplements.
The NHS recommends 7-9 hours of sleep per night. From the replies, 37% of respondents sleep 6-7 hours per night with just 3% achieving the NHS’ target.
When it comes to focus, 39% of vapers stated that they believed their levels of focus are high almost all of the time. This compares to 7% who say they have a struggle with maintaining focus. 39% say their levels of focus are maintained well throughout the day.
Half of vapers say they believe they have “normal” levels of energy, while 11% said they are constantly lacking in energy.
Naturally, there is no cause-effect relationship implied from the findings.
Vape Superstore’s David Phillips from commented on the findings: “There are many misconceptions of e-cigarette users, either being deemed unhealthy or careless, this survey proves that is not quite the case as it shows indications of their health consciousness; most notably, that 21% of e-cigarette users are sober. This seemingly positive relationship vapers have with their health further highlights that e-cigarettes are a tool to help quit smoking, as advised by the NHS.”
