Videos from the Keynotes, the Michael Russell Oration, and conference debates are beginning to be rolled out online on the Global Forum on Nicotine’s YouTube channel. First to be placed online is the GFN 2024 Michael Russell Oration, delivered by Cliff Douglas, and the first GFN 2024 Keynote speech, delivered by Andrzej Fal.
The Global Forum on Nicotine is the only international conference to focus on the role of safer nicotine products that help people switch from smoking. Safer nicotine products include vapes, oral tobaccos such as Swedish snus, tobacco-free snus, and ‘heat-not-burn’ tobacco products.
“This is a rapidly evolving area,” says the Global Forum on Nicotine’s organisers, “with many new non-combustible products emerging over the past ten to fifteen years. The rapid development and use of safer nicotine products raises a number of challenging scientific questions about their safety, who uses them and why, and the impact on smoking. These products also raise challenges for governments who seek to understand what kind of policy and regulation is appropriate. The GFN examines the rapidly developing science in relation to nicotine and its use, including policy and regulatory responses.”
The Global Forum on Nicotine 2024 Michael Russell Oration was delivered by Cliff Douglas, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Global Action to End Smoking. His presentation was titled "Bridging the Divide: Taking Global Action to End Smoking".
The Global Forum on Nicotine 2024 Keynote #1 was delivered by Andrzej Fal, and a response was given by Michelle Minton, titled "Health and economic benefits of tobacco harm reduction". Andrzej asked:
- What does the current evidence tell us about the potential health and economic benefits of safer nicotine products?
- How should we weight this evidence?
- What more do we need to know, what is the prognosis for the future and what are the short and long-term costs of different policy alternatives?
- How might legislators and regulators balance health and economic imperatives to achieve positive outcomes?
- What factors might make for an effective legislative and regulatory framework?
- How should future progress be monitored, and policies adjusted in response?
