7 Days To GFN23

The Global Forum for Nicotine event takes place in person and online next week – and there is still time to register

The Global Forum for Nicotine event (GFN23) takes place next week at the Warsaw Marriott Hotel, Poland. Organisers say that it is still possible to register to attend. They also point out that you can register for free if you would like to attend online and view selected sessions.

The conference organisers say: “With GFN23 just days away, we thought we’d give you a sneak peek at some of the discussions, debates and decision-making discourse that you can expect in Warsaw. Many of our wonderful GFN23 panel speakers have provided short presentations or videos to get our minds in gear for their respective sessions, and to give us a little time to prepare some thought provoking questions!

“You can check out the full selection of the panellists’ pre-conference submissions in the #GFN23 online programme here - just look for the “PDF” or “Video” symbol below a panellist’s name.”

Le Dinh Phuong is giving a doctor’s-eye view of tobacco harm reduction on the frontline of clinical practice, and highlighting previous harm reduction successes, for example methadone prescription to treat opiate addiction.

Le Dinh Phuong goes on to ask why these lessons haven’t been used to improve access to safer nicotine products to stem the harms due to smoking.

Cheryl Olson is looking at the illicit trade in tobacco amongst incarcerated populations, and presents her research into the nuances of nicotine use within the prison system, including failed attempts to introduce nicotine replacement therapies.

By providing safe and secure vapes in place of tobacco, Cheryl Olson highlights methods by which tobacco use in prisons can be reduced without resorting to outright nicotine bans: Inequality of access - how do we achieve a level playing field?,” organisers say.

Bernd Mayer has been carrying out a critical analysis of the evidence of the relative toxicity of nicotine since 2014. Bernd will be taking the conference audience through his research process, and presenting the fundamental point that there is no conceivable situation in which it is safer to smoke than to use an e-cigarette.

Amaliya Amaliya will be offering her insight as a first-hand researcher at her panel “Ten years of science: what have we learned?.”

John Oyston will be looking at how capitalism and public health are inescapably intertwined, asking how public health can be prioritised in “Science, regulation and morality”.

The highlight for most vapers may well be Gerry Stimson taking aim at exclusionary and targeted anti-vaping attacks from eminent researchers and tobacco control. He will be considering the history of antipathy directed towards vapers originating from leaders ostensibly fighting for public health.
