The UK’s 6.9 million adult smokers are spending up to £180 a month if they smoke a 10-pack of cigarettes a day. This increases to £360 a month for a 20-pack each day, nearly the same cost as a monthly food shop (£375)* or the average spend on Christmas gifts (£388)**.
With people across the UK suffering from rising living costs, smokers are being urged to address their spending habits to claw back some cash ahead of the festive season. This demand for extra income can be seen in the 400% increase in search demand for ‘side hustles’ which has soared in the last two years when compared to September 2020.
With a forecasted recession that is expected to hit the UK in 2023 and as energy becomes more expensive, some smokers might face a stark choice this winter: heating or smoking.
Dan Marchant, director of Vape Club, says: “Whether you're smoking roll-up cigarettes or straight cigarettes, you'll have felt the pinch of rising prices. An increase in both tax and the cost of production means an impact on your weekly or monthly outgoings.
Understandably, the cost of smoking is a huge driving factor for people looking to quit as the savings are huge. If you smoke at least 10 cigarettes a day over the course of a week, you’re spending £42. Between now and Christmas you could save £420, which could go towards your friends’ and families’ Christmas gifts.
Although quitting smoking is notoriously hard, even if you were able to switch to the less harmful alternative, you can still save £1,847 if you’re a 10-a-day smoker buying a refillable kit compared to smoking cigarettes.
The approach to Christmas is also a great time to explore your quitting options, which would help both your outgoings and your health ahead of one of the most expensive times of year. According to our calculator – which compares the cost of smoking to the cost of vaping – smokers could save themselves £28 a week by switching to a disposable vape”.
Shaun Tarzy, managing partner at Wealthcare Financial, adds: “For anyone looking to start ramping up their savings, creating a budget and sticking to it is the easiest and fastest way to begin. Cutting back on unnecessary spending and putting that money into a high-yield savings account or investing it in index funds will do wonders for anyone looking to grow their savings.
"Selling a service is a great way to make extra cash and it could even turn into a profitable side hustle or business. Find something you're good at and enjoy doing and offer it to people on Facebook and Nextdoor. Things like pet sitting, babysitting, pressure cleaning, mowing lawns and even detailing cars are all great side hustles that you can start today."
