The Independent British Vape Trade Association (IBVTA) has announced it is welcoming disposable vape manufacturer Geek Bar as an associate member. The move comes as members of the Planet of the Vapes forum have voiced their displeasure with the growth in disposable use due to the lack of recycling opportunities for users.

IBVTA says: “The IBVTA exists to give the independent vaping sector a voice with government bodies, regulators, enforcement agencies and many other interested parties that are not allowed to speak to individual businesses. Many of these bodies are also forbidden to allow the tobacco industry to form any part of respective policy influence or engagement.

“Since our foundation we have successfully expanded our associate membership to welcome reputable national and international suppliers to the UK’s vaping supply chain. We are therefore excited to announce our newest Tier One Associate Member, Geek Bar. Established in Shenzhen, China, Geek Bar has a global reputation for quality standards and product innovation.”

Speaking on the announcement, Geek Bar said: “We are committed to make an exceptional vaping experience designed for adult smokers looking to transition away from traditional cigarettes. Geek Bar is honoured to join and work with the IBVTA and grow our brand, while getting ourselves fully involved in the development and promotion of the vape industry. We wanted to protect and regulate our brand and business in the UK market with a contribution to the UK vape industry.

“Geek Bar choose to make joint efforts with the IBVTA to tackle challenges and maintain the reputation of the UK’s vape market. The IBVTA’s industry-specific knowledge will be vital for us in the UK market.”

Gillian Golden, CEO of The IBVTA said, “We are delighted to welcome Geek Bar on board as a Tier One IBVTA Associate Member, and we look forward to working with another long standing and reputable manufacturer in protecting their brand and securing the future for vaping in the UK.”

Last week, the IBVTA responded to stories of illegal disposable vapes on sale in the UK by saying: “We are aware of a media story concerning vaping products being offered for sale in the UK which do not comply with the UK’s regulations. The IBVTA has consistently maintained that non-compliance should not be a competitive advantage for a small number of bad actors.

“Vaping (the use of e-cigarettes) is now the UK’s most effective and most popular tool to de-normalise smoking and has already helped millions of smokers across the UK to quit. There are currently around 3.6 million vapers in the UK, and independent research has found vaping to be at least 95% safer than smoking.

“There is a wide range of vaping devices on the UK market, and this choice is good for consumers. Every smoker should be able to find a device and liquid combination that will be the key to them taking their important first steps to becoming smoke free, and to go on to stay smoke free.

“As an organisation, the IBVTA continues to engage with all levels of government to make the case for proportionate, evidence-based regulation. We aim to enable the UK vape sector to produce the right products for UK consumers, with proper market surveillance from recognised authorities, so that the UK maintains its position as a world leader in vaping and harm reduction. In addition, in cooperation with our Trading Standards Primary Authority, we provide advice and guidance to the industry on compliance and product stewardship, as well as assured advice on preventing underage sales.

“We will continue to work pro-actively with regulators and enforcement bodies to strive for a level playing field on which reputable businesses who abide by UK regulations can successfully operate.”

Planet of the Vapes hopes that the Geek Bar can make a firm commitment to environmental sustainability and look forward to a statement pledging to collect and recycle all of Geek Bar’s products after use.
