Poisoning is back on the agenda. It makes sense for anti-vapers as it is one thing they are able to trump about and have something approaching statistics to back up their concerns (unlike many of their other fears).
The Minnesota Poison Control System (MPCS) is being reported as announcing a 35% rise in nicotine poisonings. The leap refers to children aged Birth-5yrs and occurred during 2013/2014. Whatever the veracity of these figures, concerned vapers will worry that the inconsiderate actions of others could have ramifications on their enjoyment of vaping.
US juice makers have yet to implement a nationwide approach to labelling and childproof caps. This, and people leaving their juice unattended has left the door wide open for people like John Cole. Cole, medical director at the MPCS, has taken the opportunity to twist the story into one of flavourings and gateways: “The problem isn’t helped by e-cigarettes’ candy-flavoured smell and look. What’s probably more concerning to me is they’re made to smell like attractive things, so they’re flavoured. From grape to watermelon to cherry, e-cigarette flavours run the gamut of tastes, which have proved enticing to young children who think the e-juice is a fruity snack.”
A similar situation has been reported in Nevada. Their poison control centre says that the number of cases coming to their attention in 2014 was 44, a 100% increase on calls during 2013. Cole attributes such rises as coming from the lack of protection the bottles have and a low level of understanding of the dangers of nicotine to small children – exacerbated by the dramatic growth in popularity of vaping.
While British vapers won’t see eye to eye with his unfounded concerns over flavours, they will agree that it makes sense when he says: “Both parents and manufacturers have roles to play in reducing the number of nicotine poisonings. While safer storage will help, our main point with the manufacturers is we encourage all of them to use child safe packaging.”
Closer to home, we have another incident of a charger being misused in Wales. It might be surprising that, given the number of warnings by fire services, we are still witnessing such things taking place. Curtains caught fire and one occupant was treated for smoke inhalation by the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service at his Llandybie property.
Once more, a representative of the rescue service offered sage advice: “We are seeing heightened numbers of house fires caused by e-cigarettes, and we would urge you to always charge them on a non-flammable surface away from other flammable materials, not to charge them over long periods or leave unattended.”
Of course, there is one winner in this month’s list of warning stories: don’t hang around a Floridian vape shop late a night.
Sources close to Marie Rice refused to confirm whether she had run out of juice but police did ratify that her vape store-embedded car had contained her two children. She was later charged with drink driving, child neglect, possession of a controlled substance and driving without a valid licence – having just crashed into another car moments before deciding to check out the attys and mods.
