“The UK is a world leader on vaping but there are still issues to be resolved with other reduced risk nicotine products,” says the New Nicotine Alliance. “Additionally, this year will see the EU Commission publish proposals for taxation of vaping, heated tobacco and nicotine pouches as well as moving towards a review of the Tobacco Products Directive. This could lead to higher product costs as well as the possibility of bans on flavours and restrictions on use.”
Later in the year, the WHO will hold its tenth Conference of the Parties meeting in Panama which is expected to be very hostile towards tobacco harm reduction.
“We are not immune to any of these threats in the UK and the NNA will be watchful, ready to guide consumers how to respond to consultations. As such, we have created a prospectus with a view to developing our Board to attract new trustees with valuable expertise.”
“Don’t be daunted by the scale of this work though,” says the NNA. “We are a supportive group, and we help new trustees to understand the issues, without putting any pressure on. We are looking for enthusiasm and a willingness to learn as much as anything!”
